Forum: GratefulDead Subject: New to the archive, so many shows, so little time...

Hello everyone!,

I just discovered this site, and I am overwhelmed by the amazing selection of Grateful Dead shows available for streaming/download. Is there anyone out there with a few minutes to spare, who could recommend a top 5 or maybe 10 shows from AUDs, and or soundboards to get me started? I am mainly interested in the years from 1967-1977. Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Welcome aboard! There are probably as many "favorite shows" as people here, so I would direct you to a couple resources. First, check the list of shows on the "Staff Picks" and "Most Downloaded" column.
I also recommend the excellent blogspot "Grateful Dead Listening Guide"

http://deadlistening.blogspot.com/2009/09/1977-february-26-swing-auditorium.html

Here are other places to check for recommendations:

http://gratefuldeadprojects.com/index.html

http://www.themusicarchive.com/garcia/dead-1a.htm

It's a good start!

Welcome aboard, P! You've picked the best decade to focus on, though personally, I restrict myself to the first half of even that limited selection.

I would echo what folks suggested above: the line with the prior discussion by forumites, provided by BD above, is a good start as it gives "best" lists, as well as links to the shows (here of course).

My pers all time fav AUD is from 8-6-71, but there is also a darn good one for 6-17-75, and though the quality sucks, the show is one of the best ever, so be sure to check out 6-14-68.

I'm happy to share a Word document I compiled that gives a single page to each of about 500 shows -- setlist, reviews, URL on the Archive, notes from Deadbase.com, and more. Also includes all the Dicks Picks and other commercial releases of shows. These are the most-downloaded, most highly recommended shows on the Archive, for the most part. Just send an email to me at mmiedmonds at gmail.

And welcome!

- Michael
